HE IS A FRIEND
John 15:13
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
One of my favorite stories in the Bible is when the palsied man is carried to the Savior by his four friends. The four men carrying the litter (a stretcher) were kept from getting inside the house and to the Savior because of the multitude. But instead of giving up or saying, “Sorry, buddy, we just couldn’t get in,” they got creative. Hook or by crook—or by tile—they were going to help their friend be healed. With great faith, the friends carried the litter and carefully negotiated the narrow stairs on the side of the house to the rooftop. Here, they found the roof opening too small.
What to do?
Make it bigger, of course. With moxie and determination, these friends began ripping off roof tiles to enlarge the opening. I can only imagine Jesus gently smiling or even chuckling softly as they lowered the litter down to where the He stood. And then He healed the man, who went out rejoicing with his devoted friends.
That’s the kind of friend the Savior is to us. He is always there, always helping, always working on our behalf and never giving up on us. Do we remember that? In times of loneliness or misunderstanding, do we truly remember that we have a constant friend and companion who can help us feel peace, contentment, truth, and comfort? We only have to “pray to the Father” to ask for it, and we can receive the companionship of the Holy Ghost to feel it.
So if people or life or situations make you feel friendless, remember, you always have a friend in Him.
How can I be a more devoted friend today?
