Timothy stuck to her side while people surged passed with compliments, hand squeezes, and the occasional hug. Emmy searched every eye, but only saw excitement from a fun performance or weariness from sitting too long. If anyone had murder in mind, he was as good at putting on a fake face as she was. 

No one piqued her curiosity. Until he came. She had no clue what his name was, but the past few weeks she’d seen him almost every morning at the gym. He was much too good-looking, with his rippling muscles and deep blue eyes. She always avoided looking directly at him, though she knew that was as obvious an indicator of her attraction as staring would be. She couldn’t avoid him now. 

The wide entryway, which featured plush, faded carpet and wood-planked walls, shrank as he drew nearer. The babble of the crowd faded. He reached for her hand, staring deep into her eyes. Her hand fitted itself into his like he was a magnet. Her entire body leaned toward him. 

“You were amazing. So passionate.” He smiled and the room swayed.

Emmy was quite sure the passion she experienced right now had nothing to do with singing or acting. She should draw away but couldn’t force herself to. “Thank you,” she managed, embarrassed by the huskiness of her voice as she tried to catch a breath.

The crowd pressed forward, and he was forced to release her hand and move to the side. His blonde date gushed over Emmy for a second, and then they were gone. 

Emmy continued greeting other patrons but couldn’t forget the allure of his blue eyes. He didn’t seem like the creepy stalker type, but she had to wonder. Could he be the one sending the notes?

His gaze locked on hers. His eyes were so cold. A chill wind swept over her, but the
branches on the trees didn’t move.
“Can I help you?” She clutched her gloved fingers to stop the trembling.
His eyes darkened. His lips stayed in a tight line.
“Did you, um, get lost?” Natasha forced an unsteady laugh and arched her
eyebrows. “Easy to do in a town of less than three thousand people.” He didn’t crack a smile so she released her own, pointed toward the front yard, and stiffly recited driving directions. “Highway 89 is less than a mile east of here. The fastest route is to drive straight out of the neighborhood and then take two-hundred s-s…”
His right arm rose—a black pistol molded to his palm. Heart thudding, Natasha’s
voice sputtered and died. She raised her hands and backed up a few steps. Her gaze
darted to Jace and Lily.
“Mom!” Jace pulled Lily against his side.
Natasha felt colder than the snow clinging to her boots. The only lucid thought she
had was the overwhelming need to protect Jace and Lily. I have to say something, do
something. “Please, please don’t hurt us.”
The lines in his face hardened, anger seeping from his dark gaze. The hand holding
the gun remained steady.
Natasha’s mind raced, trying to comprehend a man pointing a gun at her with Jace
and Lily feet away. Was there any way to keep them safe?
“Look,” she began, her voice trembling on each word, “I-I’ve got some cash in the
house. I can give you my credit card and the pin numbers for my debit card. The credit
card has a hundred-thousand dollar limit.” It was a lie, but might buy her children’s
safety.
He shook his head. “I’m not after your money.” His voice was barely above a rough
whisper.
Then why are you here? She cast a nervous glance at her children. Jace clung to Lily,
watching his mother bargain for their lives. What else could she do to protect them?
Why was this guy pointing a gun at her?
Suddenly, the latest e-mail threats played through her mind.

Is any cause worth dying for?
The corner of the man’s lip quivered. His voice dropped. “I am sorry.”
Blinking to clear her vision, Natasha wondered if she’d heard him correctly. “Sorry?”

Chanel Roberts slammed the back door of her Jetta. In the trunk and back seat, she’d loaded everything she would need for the next few weeks. As part of her severance package, a moving company would ship the contents of her apartment wherever she requested—how kind of her employer, after firing her for something she didn’t do.

A hand wrapped around her waist. She screamed.

“Chanel, it’s me.” Ace spun her to face him, his blue eyes reflecting the bright lights of the parking lot.

She wielded her keys like a weapon. “Let go of me.”

He slowly released his hold but didn’t back away. Chanel yanked open the driver’s side door. If I can just get into my car and call the police. She got one foot inside before Ace grabbed her arm.

“You have to listen to me for a second.”

She tried to pull free. “No, I don’t. You set me up. I lost my job, and I lost—.” Chanel choked back the word and the sob. She’d almost admitted she was more upset about losing him than she was about him ruining her life.

“It was Willy’s fault. Please, you have to believe me. I’ll make it up to you. We’ll go away and—”

Suddenly, a large, muscular man ripped Ace away from the car, wrenching Chanel’s arm in the process.

“Thought you could run away with your girlfriend and leave me behind?” It was Willy, Ace’s repulsive friend.

Ace smacked his fist into Willy’s face. The blow hardly affected the bigger man. Chanel dove into her car, shoved her keys in the ignition, and yanked on the door. Willy stuck his arm inside the car. The door smacked his bicep and he grunted, but kept reaching towards Chanel.

Panting for breath, she turned the key, jammed the Jetta into reverse, and slammed her foot down on the gas pedal. The car flew backwards, flipping Ace and Willy away from it. Chanel wrenched the steering wheel, closed the door, and pushed the gas pedal to the floor.

The Jetta shot off through the parking lot. Chanel risked a glance in the rearview mirror. Ace and Willy scrambled from the ground. Ace reached out to her with one hand. She turned the corner, dialing 9-1-1 and cursing herself for looking back...
